ECM vs. BCM: What Do These Automotive Modules Do?

The Engine Control Module (ECM) manages core engine functions: fuel delivery, ignition timing, and emissions-related systems. When it fails, a vehicle may not start, may run poorly, or may throw persistent diagnostic trouble codes.

The Body Control Module (BCM) governs a different set of systems: lighting, locking, power windows, and communication with other modules on the vehicle. A failing BCM can produce symptoms that seem unrelated to each other because it touches so many separate subsystems.

Both modules are evaluated using the same board-level diagnostic approach: power and ground integrity, communication-bus behavior, and component-level condition. Programming and module services are performed only where technically supported and legally authorized.
